Nigeria’s past tragedies must become resources for national transformation — Peter Obi

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has said Nigeria’s past national tragedies, including the 1966 coups, civil war and episodes of mass violence, should be transformed into opportunities for national unity, stability and economic prosperity.

Obi stated this in a Facebook post while responding to concerns raised by some Nigerians over his recent appearance on Arise News, where he was asked questions about the 1966 coups.

The former Anambra State governor said he was prepared to answer questions on Nigeria’s history and other issues of national importance, stressing that his commitment was to serve Nigerians rather than avoid difficult conversations.

“I am ready and able to answer any questions about anything relating to Nigeria. I have a commitment to serve the people, not to hide from them,” Obi said.

He argued that many of Nigeria’s tragedies could have been avoided if the country had entrenched and consistently implemented its laws fairly, maintaining that leadership failure remained a major factor behind the crises.

According to him, the inability of successive leaderships to guarantee equal rights and freedoms for citizens and enforce constitutional rights without fear or favour had contributed to the country’s challenges.

Obi said Nigeria must therefore learn from its history rather than remain trapped by it, noting that historical mistakes could be turned into opportunities for transformation.

He cited the experiences of Japan, South Korea and China as examples of countries that leveraged difficult periods in their histories to pursue economic and institutional transformation.

Obi said Japan’s post-war development, South Korea’s emergence as an economic power and China’s transformation under Deng Xiaoping demonstrated how nations could draw lessons from traumatic experiences to build stronger economies and institutions.

He also referenced Rwanda, saying the country’s experience showed how a recent national tragedy could be used to promote unity and economic development.

“For me, my responsibility as Nigerian President is to turn the pains and tragedies of the past into opportunities to make Nigeria united, stable, and prosperous,” he said.

The NDC candidate called for leadership focused on issues that unite Nigerians rather than those that deepen ethnic, religious and regional divisions.

He said Nigeria possessed abundant human and natural resources across all its regions, arguing that effective leadership should create conditions for every part of the country to become productive and prosperous.

Obi also pledged that, if elected president, he would work towards a Nigeria where citizens would not suffer discrimination or disadvantage because of their ethnicity, religion or social background.

“Our past is important, but our past is not our destiny. Our future is what we do with our past,” he said.

He maintained that the country needed leaders who would not exploit historical grievances for political or personal ambitions, but would instead use the lessons of the past to build a prosperous future for all Nigerians.
