The Obi of Onitsha, Nnaemeka Achebe has praised the Nigerian Tribune for its significant role in Nigeria’s struggle for independence, marking the newspaper’s 75 years of continuous service to the nation.

In a congratulatory message addressed to Ambassador Dr. Olatokunbo Awolowo Dosunmu, Chairman of African Newspapers of Nigeria in Ibadan, Achebe expressed admiration for the Tribune’s long standing legacy as the oldest surviving newspaper in the country.

The Nigerian Tribune, established during the critical period of Nigeria’s independence movement, stood out as a strong voice in the fight for national freedom.

The newspaper, founded by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, has remained committed to reflecting his enduring vision for the common good, the monarch stated.

His words, “I write to offer my hearty congratulations to your organization at the attainment of 75 years of the existence of its flagship newspaper,The Tribune. The Tribune was born during the struggle for Nigeria’s Independence and acquitted itself very well in that struggle. It has also earned the distinction of being oldest surviving newspaper in the country. In all its years of its existence, it has always reflected the unwavering quest for the common good of its founder, the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“I wish the Tribune and its sister publications very well in the years ahead and pray that they remain unflinching and fearless in their commitment to the truth, transparency, and accountability in public life.”

Achebe further lauded the Tribune for its unwavering commitment to truth, transparency, and accountability over the years.
