Nigerian Christians join efforts to deradicalise Terrorists

Christian leaders and Nigerians affected by religious violence are increasingly becoming part of efforts to deradicalise and reintegrate former extremists, amid continuing insecurity in the country’s northern region.

The development has brought a difficult question to the forefront: can communities that have suffered attacks play a role in helping former terrorists abandon extremism and return to society?

For Ibrahim Alhassan, a Nigerian Christian who experienced religious persecution as a teenager, the answer is rooted in forgiveness and the belief that hatred should not determine the future.

Alhassan recalled how, in the 1990s, he and about 10 other Christian students at Sani Dingyadi Unity Secondary School in Sokoto State were forced to crawl on their knees while being beaten with sticks by Muslim students who called them “infidels.”

Despite the experience, he said he refused to hate his attackers.

“To hate them was the easy thing. But I still loved them,” Alhassan recalled.

His experience is now being viewed against the backdrop of Nigeria’s efforts to confront terrorism, banditry and religious extremism through deradicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration programmes.

The Federal Government’s Operation Safe Corridor, alongside initiatives by some states, seeks to disarm extremists and help repentant terrorists abandon violent ideologies and return to their communities.

However, the programmes have generated controversy, with some Christian victims and affected communities questioning whether genuine repentance can be established and whether victims’ rights and justice are receiving sufficient attention.

For many Christian communities that have experienced killings, kidnappings and displacement, reconciliation remains a difficult but increasingly important conversation.

The involvement of Christians in deradicalisation efforts therefore presents a delicate balance between forgiveness and justice, as Nigeria searches for lasting solutions to religious extremism and insecurity.

The growing conversation also underscores the role of faith communities in preventing radicalisation, rebuilding trust and promoting peaceful coexistence while ensuring that victims of terrorism are not forgotten.
