The Commander of 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Brigadier General A. O. Balogun, has pledged the support of the Army to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its fight against corruption, economic, and financial crimes.
According to a post on X by the commission, Balogun made the pledge on Monday during a courtesy visit to the Benin Zonal Directorate of the commission.
The General, who recently assumed office as Commander of 4 Brigade, Benin City, said the EFCC requires the support of all Nigerians given its role as the country’s leading anti-corruption agency.
He added that the Commission needs critical stakeholders to help track and block the movement of funds to prevent financial crimes. “If we can detect the flow of funds, we can nip such crimes in the bud,” he said.
Balogun also highlighted the long-standing collaboration between the military and the EFCC, including personnel training and efforts to curb illegal oil bunkering.
“One of the reasons for our visit is to familiarise ourselves with the leadership of the Commission so that we can build on the existing relationships between the two institutions. It is not about competition but about collaboration. It doesn’t matter who kills the snake as much as the snake is killed.”
He added that the military is willing to provide support whenever called upon.
In response, the Acting Zonal Director of the Benin Directorate, Deputy Commander of the Commission, DCE Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad, praised Balogun and his team for the visit.
He emphasised that synergy and collaboration are essential, as no single agency can effectively eliminate crime.
“We build synergy and collaborate with relevant stakeholders and the Nigeria Army is a critical stakeholder.
“Our interest and your interest are the same, which is to have a better Nigeria and so we are willing to collaborate with you,” he said.
