Netflix has reportedly canceled a controversial series after releasing just one season on its streaming platform. This decision follows a significant amount of backlash that has surrounded the series since its debut.

The series is an animated revival of an older sitcom that was quite popular and received positive reactions during its original run and in the years since. However, the revival experienced a very different response.

In fact, there were boycotts against Netflix in reaction to the release of the series, with many viewers labeling the show as racist. Given the extent of this backlash, it’s not surprising that the series was canceled after just one season. However, it is certainly disappointing to see the legacy of the original show come to this.

As summarised by Yahoo, the series faced some of the following criticism during its single-season run: “The writing was on the wall for the unfortunate series from the very beginning, with fans of the original 1970s live-action series and critics alike hounding the series for its lazy stereotypes of Black life.”

The series Good Times: Black Again is loosely inspired by the original Good Times sitcom. However, it faced significant criticism from several civil rights organizations, including the NAACP and CEMOTAP, and received negative feedback online as a result.

The original Good Times tackled a variety of complex issues during its run, such as racism, poverty, and dating, among other societal challenges. With high ratings and numerous award nominations and wins, it’s disappointing to see that the animated revival did not achieve similar success. Nonetheless, it may encourage more viewers to explore the superior original live-action series.

Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any updates regarding the Good Times brand, as well as the latest news on Netflix’s renewals and cancellations.
