Personnel of the Oyo State Police Command participated in a five-kilometre route walk, tagged Walkathon, on Saturday, as part of the activities to mark the maiden celebration of National Police Week.
The walk, which began at about 7 a.m. from the command headquarters at Eleyele, Ibadan, took senior police officers as well as rank and file members through the Polo Ground area to the Jericho area.
The senior police officers included the Commissioner of Police, Johnson Adenola; Deputy Commissioner of the State Criminal Investigation Department, Isiaka Salau; Assistant Commissioner of Police, Special Investigation Department, Martins Bamigboye; Area Commander of Apata Area Command, Justina Ogunleye; Area Commander of Moniya Area Command, Olufola Ehindero; Divisional Police Officers; and tactical unit commanders.
At the end of the walk, the police officers engaged in several physical exercises to further enhance their fitness.
Explaining the purpose of the exercise, CP Adenola stated that it was one of the activities to celebrate the maiden National Police Week and emphasised the need for security agents to be fit at all times.
He said: “As we all know, health is wealth, and fitness is part of it. As security agents, we must be fit and alert at all times.
“The Inspector General of Police, Dr Kayode Egbetokun, directed that we should all participate in the Walkathon to demonstrate our fitness, which is essential for our duties. It is part of security policing, and members of the communities have seen that we are fit, ready to go, and capable of performing our tasks at any time we are called upon.
“Security work can be very physical, and we have demonstrated today that we are physically fit.”
He added that police personnel under the command would continue the exercise to maintain their fitness.
Other activities held to celebrate the Week included a free medical outreach for members of the public, a sanitation exercise, and an interactive stakeholders’ meeting, which focused on inclusive policing.
