THE Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Nasarawa State Chapter, on Monday turned out en-masse to mourn their fallen workers who were killed by stray bullet at the Government House gate, during the visit of its National president, last year.
Speaking at a rally held at the secretariat of the NLC in Lafia to commemorate in low key, the 2017 Workers’ Day celebration, the State Chairman of NLC Comrade Abdullahi Adeka, lamented the ill treatment of workers in the state.
He decried that, those serving in government amass wealth for themselves at the expense of the entire citizens of the state adding that, they must be made to give account of how they acquired their wealth.
Adeka who was flanked by his Trade Union Congress (TUC) counterpart, Comrade Sabo Namo declared that, “the organised labour are giving the state government one week ultimatum from today to pay all outstanding salaries of August, remaining percentage of November 2016, and February to April salaries or face a strike action.”
“The government has reneged in their part of the agreement with the union on the intervention of the Ministry of Labour that if one month allocation is not enough to pay they should keep it till the next month.”
“Could you believe that throughout 2017 workers in the state have received their salary only once, that is January salary?” he said.
Adeka therefore, assured workers that the leadership of the union would not be intimidated and would pursue the issues of workers welfare to a logical conclusion.
Nigerian Tribune reports that, the workers were all in black attire to mourn the death of their colleagues and the poor state of workers welfare.
