Nasarawa government will not compensate Breeze FM – Commissioner

Published by

The Nasarawa State government has declared that it will not compensate Breeze FM 99.9 Lafia because it was an illegal structure.

Breeze FM Lafia, the only private station in the state capital was demolished last week, two months after it was commissioned by Governor Umaru Tanko Al-makura.

Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday in Lafia, the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism Abdulhamid Kwarra said the government only pays compensation when it is taking over a structure and not when it is demolishing an illegal structure.

“Breeze FM operated on a plot covered by C of O number NS07328 with a purpose clause to be used only for residential and the attention of Dr Nawani Aboki, the owner of the Breeze FM, was drawn to the breach terms and condition of right of occupancy by the Ministry of Lands, Survey and Town Planning,” he said.

He said the station faulted the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission (NBC) code in siting the station, saying members of the public were exposed to electromagnetic wave which is dangerous to health.

The commissioner declared that government is not out to clamp down on any media house but enforcing it laws.

Nigerian Tribune recalls that NBC officials who were at the station after the demolition, condemned the action, buttressing that the station met the requirements of the commission.
