National Action Committee on AIDS (NACA) has commended Bauchi State Government for its efforts at controlling HIV /AIDS in the state being the only state in the country that has HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria under one agency in line with the best world requirements.
The commendation was made by the Director of Community Prevention and Care NACA, Alex Ogundipe when he led a delegation of EU-UN Mission Monitoring under UNAIDS to Bauchi to monitor the implementation of the intervention program in 15 states of the country.
He said that NACA is impressed with the performance of the implementation of the program in the state stressing that it is in line with the expectations of the donor agencies saying that other states need to emulate what is happening in the state.
In her presentation, Deputy Director, Community Prevention and Care Services, Mrs Yinka Falola -Anoemuah said that a total of 310 people living with HIV/AIDs in Bauchi state benefitted from COVID 19 palliative and personal protection equipment (PPE) during the outbreak of the pandemic.
Falola-Aniemuah stated that the project was tagged ‘NACA-UNAIDS Joint UN Basket fund project’ conducted in 15 states across the country to cushion the effect of the pandemic on PLWHA.
According to her, the project also mobilized PLWHA on prevention of COVID 19, Gender-Based Violence and HIV and access to vaccines which is part of the objectives of the project funded through the joint basket fund.
Yinka Falola said that, “9,770 people living with HIV/AIDs were supported during the COVID 19 pandemic in 15 states across the country. They were given the sum of N25,000 within six months to all the beneficiaries in two trenches of N10, 000 and N15, 000”.
“The monitoring exercise provided a platform to interact with beneficiaries and get feedback on the outcomes of the intervention. From their testimonies, beneficiaries supported their children’s education and also started up small trades,” she said.
The Deputy Director further said that the beneficiaries were integrated into the National Social Register as vulnerable members of the society just as she appreciated the efforts of the Bauchi State Government and Development partners in the fight against HIV/AIDS and COVID 19.
Speaking earlier during the meeting, an official of the EU, Ms Chioma Soji, said that the monitoring exercise was aimed at generating feedback for future programming and planning of such interventions.
While giving an overview of the situation in the state, Director, Planning, Research and Statistics, Bauchi State Agency for the Control of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, Leprosy and Malaria(BACATMA), Danladi Mohammed, said that the Agency procured 80,000 HIV tests kits and distributed same across health facilities in the state.
He said that the EU-UN project was conducted in Bauchi and Katagum Local government councils in the state saying, “In 2012, the prevalence rate was 6.8 percent but in 2018, Statistics revealed that the prevalence rate has dropped to 0.4,”.
Executive Chairman of BACATMA, Dr Sani Mohammed Dambam commended EU-UN under the UNAIDS joint basket funds which he said has really complemented the efforts of the Agency in the fight against HIV/AIDS among the people.
