IN 2016, many fashion make-up styles made major comeback, especially from the 90s, with others subjected to numerous creativities. A few of these trends are expected to last into 2017, in line with newer style inclinations. The following are a few 2017 trends for the stylish diva.
Sneakers on everything
Not too long ago, in the Nigerian fashion scene, sneakers for women were usually worn on jeans and as a casual outfit. However, 2017 will see a major rebranding of sneakers. Sneakers will go with as many outfits as possible, including Ankara, lace outfits and even long dresses.
Cold shoulder sleeves
Also referred to as cut-out sleeves, this made a major comeback towards the end of 2016, featuring not just on English outfits but on Ankara and lace outfits as well. They are a favourite for ladies of as many shapes and sizes as possible, because they give the arms a flattering and flirty appeal.
Matte out, lip gloss in
2016 saw a revolution in lipstick application, with the matte finish taking the day. However, for 2017, following the break in the weather and the intensity of the harmattan season, matte would be the wrong choice of lipstick for the makeup enthusiast, as they would only help to emphasise the dried out nature of the lips. As such, 2017 would see a reawakening of the lip gloss trend.
Exaggerated sleeves, the fringe revolution
Towards the end of 2016, the fringe trend in the Nigerian fashion scene came to bear. As a result of the frills appeal that fringe offers, especially as it helps to accentuate the neck, bust line or the legs, depending on the location of the fringe style, the trend is expected to last through this year and beyond.
Patterned after the flared/peplum waist design, more sleeves will take the exaggerated shape, although to varying degrees of flare or ball.
The natural hair trend
It started as something not many people would want to align with. However, with time, probably as a result of the recession, or probably a need to begin afresh, late 2016 saw more women growing and styling their natural hair including celebrities even for weddings. Adesua Etomi also rocked a near imitation of the glamorous natural hair look for her wedding in the hit movie, The Wedding Party. Considering the harsh weather, and the over 100 per cent rise in cost of hair extensions, 2017 will see more women rocking natural hair.
Jumpsuits made a comeback
Sometime in 2015 and for a few months in 2016, jumpsuits stormed the Nigerian fashion scene but faded out after a while. However, 2017 will see a return of the one-piece body magic which never fails to flatter the female figure, as long as the right print pattern is kept in mind.
Glitter is the new regular
Late 2016 brought with it a major shakeup in the makeup world as glitter made its way into eyeshadow, lipstick, powder and even blush. This is expected to also be in vogue in 2017.
Also expected to trend in 2017 are thigh-high slits, peg trousers, metallic colour themes on outfits, untamed brows, shirt dresses, thigh-high boots on shirts worn as dresses, fish nets, among others.
