THE Political Awareness Group (PAG) has called on the Oyo State government to immortalise three Muslim lawyers who were selected as judges of high court but died while awaiting the official approval of their promotions.
Dr Moruf Yusuf, the vice chairman of PAG, an association of Muslim professionals and technocrats for good governance, made the call at a press conference held on Wednesday in Ibadan.
Dr Yusuf said apart from immortalising the “deserving lawyers who were denied the prestigious promotion from the bar to the bench,” their families should also be adequately compensated by the Oyo State government.
“It is painful indeed that the three judges denied have given up the ghost. Now that they have all passed on, it will be of utmost importance to immortalise them, compensate their families and condole with Muslims in Oyo State,” he said.
The PAG vice-chairman said out of the 36 applicants, each of the three lawyers emerged first from state judiciary, Ministry of Justice and Nigeria Bar Association after rigorous examinations and wondered why their confirmation by National Judicial Council was “stopped” by the state government.
He also implored the state government to immediately install the new Eleruwa of Eruwa whom the Supreme Court has declared as the authentic traditional ruler of the town.
Dr Yusuf called for equitable appointment of commissioners and other government functionaries and fairness in employment opportunities in the state.
