A mother and her daughter who were both diagnosed with cancer have died 10 hours apart in Brazil.

Cibele Marchis, 28, died at about 4pm on Thursday while her mother, Maria Elisabete Nogueira, 56, was sedated at another hospital in Mogi Guacu, about 100 miles northwest of Sao Paulo.

Family members and friends were attending Cibele’s wake when they received news of Maria’s death. The mother and daughter were later buried together at a municipal cemetery.

Rawlinson Leandro da Costa, Maria’s nephew and Cibele’s cousin, told local media: “Neither of the two wanted to see the other die. They even commented on it, sometimes jokingly, other times seriously, and it happened. One never found out about the other’s death. It really is an astonishing thing.”

Cibele, who worked in real estate and digital marketing and had nearly 12,000 followers on Instagram, was diagnosed first.

She had a rare form of cancer that started in her adrenal gland. Her first symptoms appeared in December 2023.

In March, Cibele shared a photo of herself receiving treatment in hospital and wrote: “As long as your only problem is money, be grateful.

“Worse is facing something that not even all the money in the world can solve.”

She later developed infections in December after undergoing surgery, prompting her family to be called to the hospital.

However, she later recovered and was briefly discharged.

Her mother had been battling pancreatic cancer and had been in hospital since September 17 after her condition worsened.

Following their deaths, family friend Jorge Vitorino paid tribute to Maria, whom he referred to by her nickname, Bia.

He said: “It is with profound sorrow and immense sadness that we announce the passing of Bia Nogueira, mother of our dear Cibele Marchis.

“Bia was a light wherever she went: a joyful, affectionate woman with a generous heart, who left unforgettable marks on everyone who had the blessing of sharing her life.

“Her life was a constant example of faith, love, affection and dedication to family and friends.”
