WORRIED by the threats of deforestation in the country, a Bauchi based Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) known as, ‘Natural Resources Conservation Foundation’ has appealed to the Federal Government to make kerosene available and affordable to the common man in order to avoid reckless felling down of trees to make firewood and charcoals for cooking.
Addressing Journalists Sunday in Bauchi, Chairman of the Foundation, Dr Ahmad Mai Abba lamented that the reckless cutting down of trees in the society is creating artificial desertification and other disasters such as the recent windstorm that rocked the most parts of the State claiming many lives and destroying properties worth several millions of Naira.
Ahmad Mai Abba who expressed the resolve of the NGO to embark on the massive awareness campaign on the negative activities of dumping of refuse in drainages and wanton felling down of trees in the state, also advocated the recruitment of forests guards as part of measures to stop illegal deforestation.
He said that the Foundation focuses on two major agendas which include, practical intervention in the areas of refuse collection, the creation of drainage system among communities and aggressive trees planting.
The Chairman noted that protection and conservation of natural resources is the responsibility of all, hence the need for collective efforts towards safeguarding Natural Endowments from destruction.
