Leg ulcer common in teenage sickle cell patients – Expert

DR Henry Ekwedigwe, an Orthopaedic Surgeon, says leg ulcer is common on sickle cell patients between the age of 10 and 19.

Ekwedigwe, a private medical practitioner, disclosed this during 2018 World Sickle Cell Day Celebration organised by Cannon Kene Sickle Cell Foundation in Enugu on Thursday.

He explained that the disease called leg ulcer is common among children under 19 years who are undernourished.

He stressed that the blockage of the blood vessels could also lead to leg ulcer among the mentioned age children.

Dr Barth Chukwu, a Paediatrician with the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Enugu, said that Omega 3 fatty acid drug was a cheaper, available and better agent that could prevent stroke especially in children with Sickle Cell Disease.

Chukwu added that the drug reduces some of the symptoms in patients living with Sickle Cell Disease as it has no side effect.

According to him, the blockage of the blood vessels in patients leads to stroke, especially on Sickle Cell patients.

On his part, Dr Muideen Bakare, Chief Consultant at the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Enugu, advised patients who are living with Sickle Cell Disease not to be depressed by what others say concerning their situations.

He urged them to have defined goals of achievement and as well a sense of direction irrespective of discrimination by other people.

“If you have a set goal, the thought of committing suicide and death will be far from you.

“It is a fight of the mind more than a fight of the body, therefore be focused in life so as to achieve your goal no matter the challenges you may be experiencing,” he said.
