The Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, has won the maiden edition of the African Students Football Union Soccer Tournament.
It won the gold, with lone goal, at a final match against the University for Development Studies, Tamale, Ghana, on Sunday after beating other participating institutions which made it to the fiesta including Kenyata University, Nairobi; Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria; Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode; and Edo State University, among others.
By winning the competition, tagged “Nigeria 2019” and played at Adamasingba Stadium, Ibadan, Oyo State, the university would represent Africa at the world stage of the tournament in Russia later in the year.
The Spokesman of LASU, Mr Ademola Adekoya, who made the disclosure in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday, said the university won over 90 per cent of all the prizes available for grasp by participants at the competition.

He listed the prizes to include Best team, highest goals scorer, best goalkeeper, best coordinated and fair play team.
He said the team who returned to the campus on Monday afternoon with all the medals won had been received by the vice-chancellor, Prof Olarenwaju Fagbohun and other management staff and the entire university community.
He said the VC expressed great delight that the exemplary performance of the soccer team further demonstrated the testament that LASU is not only for academic excellence but also for sport and character moulding.
Adekoya, however, quoted VC as saying, “Your victory at the tournament is not for Lagos State alone, but for Nigeria as a whole and I want to assure you that the university management will give you all necessary support as you will be representing Africa at the world stage in Russia later this year.”
