The Lagos State Safety Commission has taken strict measures to enforce safety laws in the past year, sealing over eight hundred and forty event centres and social facilities for violations.
Gbenga Oyerinde, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Intergovernmental Relations, highlighted these efforts during a ministerial press briefing to commemorate Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s first year in his second term.
Oyerinde emphasised the commission’s commitment to public safety, stating that enforcement actions were taken at various establishments, including event centres, clubs, lounges, and hotels.
Notable examples include the Lekki Conservation Centre and Quilox.
Additionally, the commission inspected approximately 7,819 facilities to ensure compliance with safety regulations, issuing fire safety compliance certificates to about 5,220 of them.
In addition to enforcement actions, the commission conducted 365 advocacy initiatives to promote environmental safety.
Oyerinde reiterated that these efforts align with the THEMES Plus developmental agenda of Governor Sanwo-Olu, aimed at mitigating risks and protecting the lives and property of Lagos State residents.
“Our ministry, in working in line with the THEMES Plus developmental Agenda of Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, to mitigate risks and protect life and property of government and citizens of Lagos’ State, have sealed eight hundred and forty event centres and social facilities for safety violations and non-compliance of extant laws”, Oyerinde said
Furthermore, fire safety officers from the state’s Emergency and Fire Rescue Department successfully rescued 376 victims, preserving an estimated property worth N152.22 billion.
However, there were regrettable losses, including 82 casualties and N25.37 billion in property.
