Lagos State government, on Wednesday, rolled out programmes for the country’s 60th Independent anniversary celebration, saying the occasion would be low-key in the face of COVID-19 pandemic that has ravaged the whole world and the country inclusive.
The State Commissioner for Home Affairs, Prince Anofiu Olanrewaju Elegushi, said this during a press conference which took place in Ikeja.
According to the commissioner, who said the occasion called for a sober reflection, there would be Jumat Service, on Friday, September 25, at the Lagos State Community Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja, to be followed by Interdenominational Thanksgiving Service, on Sunday, September 27, at Chapel of Christ The Light, Alausa.
He said the grand finale, which is the Independence Day Parade, would hold at Agege Stadium, Agege, on October 1, noting that the state government decided to have a low- key celebration as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding that the closing session would be held under strict COVID-19 protocols as attendance would be by invitation.

“This year’s Independence Day celebration calls for celebration, although we cannot roll out drums due to the scourge of COVID-19 that is still with us, however, this Diamond Jubilee calls for sober reflection and thanksgiving to the almighty for keeping the Nigerian state together thus far,” he said.
“In the light of this, Lagos State as a leading state in the country, therefore, believes that commemorating this day, it would join the rest of the other states in bringing to the fore the need to promote peace and unity among the citizenry.
“May I add at this juncture that the grand finale of the celebrations will be held under strict COVID-19 protocols as attendance will be by invitation. The aim is at controlling the crowd and avoiding much of human contacts, bearing in mind that we are gradually relaxing all measures put in place to curb the spread of the virus,” he added.
Commissioner for Information, Mr Gbenga Omotoso, said Lagos State, being the commercial centre of the nation, is set to lead other states in this year’s celebration.
