Kwara loses N730m to illegal miners yearly

KWARA State House of Assembly has said that the state is losing about N730 million annually to activities of illegal miners in the state.

The House disclosed this during its Thursday sitting, lamenting that operations of illegal miners had made the state to be rated as the worst state in Africa where illegal mining was taking place.

Presiding over the sitting, the Speaker of the House, Dr. Ali Ahmad, explained that activities of illegal miners in some parts of the state had become worrisome, and saying that they were on daily basis depriving the state of its economic advantage.

He therefore constituted a seven-man ad-hoc committee to look into their nefarious activities for necessary probing in order to free the state from the shackles of illegal miners who he said had seriously encroached the state.

He lamented that the worse part of it was that 75 per cent of the illegal miners were foreigners who he said came from Benin Republic to rub Kwara state of its valuable resources.

The committee, chaired by the House Leader, Hon. Hassan Oyeleke, was expected to submit its reports within two weeks.
