The African Bar Association (AfBA) has said that the ongoing strike by the judiciary workers in Nigeria would have been unnecessary if the rule of law is strictly adhered to.
The President, Hannibal Uwaifo, made this known during a discussion on the Rule of Law in the ECOWAS sub-region held, on Monday in Lagos.
Uwaifo, who expressed disappointment at the ongoing strike, said that all the necessary provisions have been made in the constitution but the government would always find a way to turn deaf ears to it and this is usually the end result.
He, therefore, canvassed for the autonomy of the Judiciary as this would help in mitigating this kind of issues and remove any bottleneck that has the tendency of affecting the dispensation of justice in the country.
“Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) strike would have been unnecessary if the government and those who run governance are not observing the rule of law.
“The constitution has provided the necessary provisions for workers but the governors won’t honour it.
“The Judiciary staff are doing the right thing.
“Judicial autonomy is a necessity and should be implemented. Judicial autonomy is the beginning.” Uwaifo stated.
Hannibal stated that The African Bar Association stated its disaffection towards selective justice, noting that it is not only saddled with the responsibility of protecting the rule of law but also the media practitioners too, have the right.
He added that Africa does not need to get foreign aids to fight for the rule of law, noting that everything is in the rule of law.
