The Nigerian equities market closed the week ended March 18 on a wave of optimism, with John Holt Plc emerging as the best-performing stock and igniting renewed investor enthusiasm for mid-cap counters and turnaround stories on the Nigerian Exchange Limited.
The benchmark All-Share Index advanced by 1.39 per cent week-on-week to settle at 201,156.86 basis points, while overall market capitalisation climbed to N129.13 trillion, reflecting sustained buying interest across key sectors. Analysts say the strong weekly performance indicates that investors are increasingly confident in companies with solid fundamentals, balanced growth strategies, and clear recovery narratives.
John Holt Plc led the charge on the NGX, recording a remarkable 25.4 percent gain to close at N11.85, up from N9.45 at the start of the week. The stock posted consistent daily gains throughout the week, climbing steadily across all trading sessions and hitting a fresh 52-week high, a level that had remained elusive for months. Market observers attribute the surge to a combination of speculative activity, renewed investor interest in mid-cap recovery plays, and confidence driven by the company’s improving financial position.

Investors are particularly optimistic about John Holt’s diversified operations, which span technical equipment, leasing, marine services, and property. This diversity provides a cushion against sectoral volatility and strengthens the company’s ability to generate multiple revenue streams. Its latest financial statement underscores this positive trend. For the 2025 financial year, the company posted revenue of N1.45 billion, while profit before tax stood at N364 million and profit after tax climbed to N469 million. Total assets increased to N9.74 billion, and shareholders’ equity rose to N5.27 billion, signaling improved balance sheet strength and operational efficiency. Analysts say these numbers demonstrate that John Holt is no longer merely a speculative play; it is a company showing tangible recovery, which is increasingly being recognised by the market.
The broader market also reflected strong bullish momentum. Advancers outnumbered decliners, with 48 stocks rising compared to 43 that fell, a clear indication that investors were selective but confident in their picks. Other notable gainers included BUA Cement Plc, which gained more than twenty-one per cent, Premier Paints Plc, which surged by over twenty per cent, and Zenith Bank Plc, which rose by nearly fifteen per cent. Industrial and financial sector stocks dominated the gains, with investors gravitating towards counters perceived to have strong earnings potential and resilient business models.
Liquidity on the bourse improved sharply, with total trading volume for the week reaching 8.76 billion shares valued at N267.25 billion. Financial services and ICT stocks accounted for the bulk of trading activity, underscoring their continued role as market movers. Analysts suggest that the surge in volume is a reflection of growing investor confidence in the equity market, even as the macroeconomic environment remains mixed.
While John Holt’s meteoric rise has captured headlines, analysts caution that sustainability remains key. Continued operational efficiency, earnings growth, and prudent capital management will determine whether the stock maintains its upward trajectory. For now, however, the company stands as a symbol of optimism in the market, rewarding investors willing to bet on credible recovery stories.
As the NGX eyes further gains in the coming weeks, all eyes will remain on mid-cap and turnaround stocks, with John Holt leading the charge as proof that resilience and improved fundamentals can command the market’s attention and, more importantly, its capital.
