IWD: Edo first lady charges women to seek knowledge, become valuable

The first lady of Edo State, Betsy Obaseki, urged women on Friday to acquire the necessary knowledge that would make them valuable, enabling them to compete with and complement men in the country.

Mrs. Obaseki delivered this message during the International Women’s Day (IWD) event organized by the John Odigie Oyegun Public Service Academy in Benin, Edo State. She emphasized that the event’s theme, “Inspire Inclusion, Empowering Women in Public Service Through Inclusive Leadership,” should inspire women to strive for the top in their chosen careers and actively participate in the decision-making process in the country.

She also encouraged women to engage in politics to ensure that individuals lacking competence are removed from the political space, asserting that the narrative must change for the country to realize its full potential.

According to her, “Inclusion means gender equality must be upheld, and no woman must be left out. Every woman is valuable because they all have something to bring to the table, even as a housewife.”

“Women contribute significantly to grooming and developing society as they take care of the family. We have witnessed women achieving remarkable feats in various fields. Both genders should work together; each has its unique traits, and neither can replace the other. Women must recognize their value and place in society, not allowing anyone to undermine them. Give your best by building capacity so that you qualify for certain positions in society. Acquire knowledge to add value to your job.

“Women should get involved in politics, which has been infiltrated by individuals lacking competence. This is the story of Nigeria, and it must change,” she added.

The Director-General of JOOPSA, Imuwahen Ajoonu, also spoke, calling for the creation of environments that uplift and empower all women, regardless of their background, ethnicity, or abilities.

She stated, “By fostering inclusivity, we enrich not only our organizations and communities but also ensure that the voices of all women are heard and valued.

“We must acknowledge the persistent challenges faced by many women in their pursuit of leadership roles. As we explore the theme of inclusive leadership, let us commit to creating environments that uplift and empower all women, irrespective of their background, ethnicity, or abilities.

“Our collective efforts can inspire a new era of leadership characterized by collaboration, empathy, and a commitment to fairness. Let International Women’s Day be a catalyst for change – a day that propels us forward on the path to true equality, where women in public service can lead without limitations, and where their accomplishments are celebrated as a testament to the power of inclusion,” she added.
