All is set by Interswitch, an integrated payments and digital commerce company, as it sets to commence airing this year’s edition of its National Science Competition among secondary school students in Nigeria and Kenya, on television stations.
The annual competition with this year’s edition fifth in the series was instituted by the company as part of its social intervention initiatives on education to reward academic excellence and boost passion among Africa’s youths for the study of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in schools.
The Executive Vice-President, Group Marketing and Corporate Communications of the company, Cherry Eromosele, said the competition would be aired from October 29 on DSTV Africa Magic Family Channel and AIT network every Sunday at 6.00 pm and 7.30 pm respectively, while a repeat broadcast would be aired only on DSTV Africa Magic Channel on Wednesdays.
She noted that the overall winner would receive N7.5 million worth of scholarship in any university of his or her choice in Africa and to be spread across five years, a laptop, and monthly stipends, while the first runner-up and second runner-up would receive N4 million and N1 million worth of scholarships, spread over three years and one year, a laptop each, and monthly stipends, respectively.
Eromosele explained further that many participants would be rewarded this year to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the competition,
According to her, the company has decided to give cash rewards to the fourth and up to the 21st position, who would make it to the finals and semi-finals of the competition in Nigeria and all their teachers, as well as six teachers in Kenya as a way of recognizing their efforts in preparing the students and laying the foundational bricks for a brighter future for them.
She added, “We also intend to give a total of 54 students with high scores from across the country who participated in the pre-qualifying stages of the competition held earlier in the year with free JAMB form as a way of encouraging them.”
Eromosele, however, expressed excitement over the great impact the competition is having on the students and STEM education in the continent.
She said the company would continue to be part of the success stories and journey to greatness of many youths in Africa.
