Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State hosted a one-day teachers’ summit at the council secretariat in Ojoto.

The Transition Committee Chairman of the Council Area, Mrs Amaka Obi, in her welcome address, said the initiative was reawakened by the eagerness through the Soludo solution education reform.

“I paid an unscheduled visit to a few secondary and primary schools in Idemili South LGA to have a firsthand experience of the state of affairs in our schools. I discovered we have amazing teachers spread across our schools; however, not without some limitations which have spurred me to convene this ‘Teachers Retraining Summit.

“Every professional in this world needs upskilling because every profession changes or undergoes modifications for the betterment of itself, especially with reformations to cater to the 21st-century student.

“Education is one of the topmost priorities of the Soludo solution agenda. You can recall that earlier in this administration, Mr Governor had employed about five thousand teachers, rejigged the Teacher Education System, and brought it to the 21st Century Digital standard.

“In Idemili South, we are resilient and have queued into this vision to continue training and retraining our teachers. I urge you all to remain steadfast in imparting knowledge to our children.”

The Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr Vera Nwadinobi, in her address, thanked the Idemili South boss for her interest in education.

“Without the teachers being digital and current, morally upright, upholding the values in our society, we will not get it right. It is with meetings like this, for skills training, that we pass other information which will help teachers handle students better.

“If you want to bring up the standard of education, you, first of all, bring up the standard of teachers. If the standard of the teachers is not high, then the standard of the students will certainly be low.

Speaking about morals, the ASUBEB boss urged teachers to live up to expectations, stating that teachers and parents are the moulders of society through their impact.

“Despite the fact that teachers are suffering, we should continue to do good because there will always be rewards for our deeds. Money is not everything. Try your best to be good teachers because the way society is going, is worrisome, and it is only teachers that will make it better.”

Member representing Idemili North constituency at the Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon. Kingsley Udemezue, in his speech, commended the Chairman of Idemili South council for her initiative and commitment, stating that the summit will yield positive fruits in the life of the teachers.

“Teachers are shepherds. Don’t fail those children entrusted in your care. Handle them with care because you are building them,” Udemezue said.

“Why do we have a lot of school dropouts and criminality in our society, ritual killings, insecurity, and cultism? Teachers need to do more. The impact you make is affecting one life.

“I have a bill I want to propose on skill acquisition in schools. Why is there so much unemployment in Nigeria today? Because the government can only provide 25 per cent jobs.”

In his lecture on the theme “Building Back Better in Education and Training; Reimagining, Reorienting, and Redistributing,” Dr Ikechukwu Augustine, a lecturer from the Faculty of Education, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, urged the government and stakeholders to motivate teachers by rewarding their efforts.

Dr Ikechukwu challenged teachers on the need to have integrity and be principled. “What should people know you for? How do they see you? Set good examples and show the light through your lifestyle,” he said.

Commissioner for Education, Anambra State, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, The Chairman PPSSC Prof. Nkechi Ikejugu, Lady Patricia Nkemdilim, Mrs. Onyinye Anthonia, in their separate speeches, urged teachers to be proud of their profession. They also called for more motivation and training for teachers from both the government and stakeholders.
