Heritage conservation on Cultural Centre

By Olaoye Matthew Adeniyi

Cultural heritage comprises both tangible resources, such as monuments, archaeological sites, museums and artefacts, and intangible elements, including oral traditions, indigenous knowledge, music, festivals and craftsmanship. Nigeria possesses rich heritage assets, including the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, Sukur Cultural Landscape, and important archaeological discoveries at Nok and Igbo-Ukwu. These resources preserve history, strengthen identity and support education, research and tourism.

Heritage conservation involves protecting, preserving, documenting and maintaining cultural resources to ensure their authenticity and continued existence. The National Commission for Museums and Monuments plays a central role in safeguarding Nigeria’s heritage. Heritage management focuses on planning, monitoring and utilising these resources while balancing conservation with public access, education, tourism and community participation.

Effective conservation contributes to sustainable development by generating employment through heritage tourism, supporting education, strengthening national identity and promoting environmental sustainability through traditional conservation practices.

However, several challenges threaten heritage preservation in Nigeria. These include inadequate funding, climate change, rapid urbanisation, illegal trafficking of cultural property, poor public awareness and insecurity.

To address these challenges, government should increase funding, strengthen heritage laws, promote heritage education, adopt digital technologies, involve local communities, encourage sustainable tourism, develop climate adaptation strategies and provide professional training. Strong partnerships among stakeholders are also essential.

Preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage is vital for national identity, economic growth and sustainable development for future generations.
