EACH time the hair is washed, styled, conditioned or combed, the ends of the hair feel the impact the most because they are the oldest and most fragile part of the strand. They also get weaker over time.
Protective hairstyles, which are styles that tuck the ends of your hair away from being exposed to damaging agents such as dust, will enable the hair retain length, reduce split ends and knotting. It also allows for healthier and longer hair.
Protective hairstyles include twists, braids, buns, wigs. Sometimes, synthetic or human hair is added for even more versatility in colour, thickness, length and appearance in texture.
Braids: This is a type of complex structure or pattern, formed by interlacing three or more strands of attachment such as textiles, yarns or hair. It can last up to 4-6 weeks with adequate care. Types of braids include box braids, cornrow braids, micro braids and so on.
Flat twists: They can work well on both natural and relaxed textures. They are similar to cornrows, easier than braids, faster to do and much less hassle than wearing your hair up.
Wigs: Wigs are super versatile protective styles. We have the synthetic and human hair. While the former has a shorter lifespan and are more affordable, the latter can last more than a year but are quite expensive.
Crochet hair: This is a unique braiding technique. Here, the hair is braided down into cornrows, and then a crochet needle is used to weave the hair of your choice through the braids. It is affordable and easy to install. It can last for as long as a month if well maintained.
Braided ponytail/bun: This style is achieved using synthetic braiding hair. The braiding technique varies in style. You can wear the ponytail down or wrap the braids into a bun for a more formal look.
Other protective hairstyles are faux locs, pineapple/puff updo, two strand twists, braided crown and so on. Just know what style works for your hair and you are good to go!
