THREE policemen and two civilians have been killed by gunmen in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State.
It was gathered that the incident happened last Friday at about 6:30 p.m when traders from neighbouring villages and local government areas were returning to their destinations after attending the weekly Friday market in Mangu town.
Nigerian Tribune learnt that the policemen were at their check-point at Mangu-Bokkos junction when the gunmen, numbering about 15, ambushed them.
The gunmen also carted away the rifles of the policemen after the attack.
A source close to the scene of the incident said the attack caused pandemonium in Mangu community, as those returning from the market took to their heels, while motorists and passengers abandoned their vehicles and ran for their lives.
It was further learnt that some youths from Fungazai village, however, summoned courage and arrested two of the gunmen while they were trying to leave the area.

However, other gang members attacked the youth, killing two of them and freeing their members.
The source, who did not want his name in print, said: “The gunmen attacked the youth and killed two of them, who were identified as Daskyarhar Yohanna and Ezekiel Dunju, while three others sustained gunshot wounds.
“The gunmen have been terrorising Mangu for some time now and we are appealing to the security agencies to help us flush them out of our communities.” When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Mathias Terna Tyopev, said the command was aware of the incident and investigations had already begun.
