GOVERNMENT at all levels in Nigeria has been urged to support Qur’anic schools and centres across the country and provide necessary interventions in terms of facilities, including language laboratories.
This was contained in the communique issued after a two-day national conference organised by the National Board for Arabic and Islamic Studies (NBAIS), in collaboration with Al-Ansar Foundation, held at the National Mosque, Abuja, between Monday and Tuesday.
The conference, which had the theme ‘Role of Arabic and Islamic Education in Advancing Peace and Harmony in Nigeria’, was attended by 2,100 participants from institutions of higher learning and Qur’anic schools from all states of the federation.
The communique was signed by Professor Muhammad Umaru Ndagi and Dr Abubakar Kawu Hassan, chairman and secretary of the communique committee, respectively.
The document said that such government interventions should also cover the human resource needs of the schools.
The conference recommended that learning about religion should be made compulsory at all levels of Nigeria’s educational system, including tertiary institutions, while government should commit itself to providing equal access and opportunities to education for all Nigerians.
The conference urged the Federal Ministry of Education to expedite action on concluding the process of forwarding the NBAIS draft bill to the National Assembly.
It noted that the non-passage of the bill for the establishment of NBAIS is inhibiting the board from realising the objectives for which it was established.
It further recommended that NBAIS should be part of government decision-making process in regulating preaching activities in the country.
