As part of efforts to encourage girlchild education in Nigeria particularly in the North, African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development Centre (LSD) with support from Malala Foundation has organised an inter-school debate competition for girls in secondary schools in Adamawa State.
Lawal Amodu, programme officer of the centre, in his welcome address at the occasion held in Yola, said that the inter-school debate and spelling bee competitions were organised for the selected junior secondary schools purposely to encourage more schoolgirl dropouts to return back to school.
The competitors were drawn from schools in the centre’s focal local government areas of Maiha, Song and Numan for their teachers and parents to assess the level of performance of their wards.
He stressed that this year’s annual inter-school debate competition tagged ‘Investing in Girl Education- A waste or worthy investment’ was part of the centre’s key projects, noting that through engagement programmes about 960 drop out school girls have returned back to schools.
He added that safe space vocational skills trainings are being conducted for students in the catchment areas so that they can be exposed to technical knowledge on different ventures.
Adamawa State Commissioner for Water Resources, Hassan Kaigama, in his goodwill message, expressed delight with the support being rendered to the state by the centre in collaboration with Malala Foundation saying it is worth commendation.
Represented by Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr Sani Shallangwa, Hassan Kaigama appealed to other CSOs and NGOs to emulate the gesture in the interest of humanity.
