Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, oversaw the distribution of N125 million in cash, food, and items to over 40,000 families in Konduga Local Government Area as part of an ongoing palliative exercise.
Speaking in Konduga town on Monday during the distribution exercise, which took place in three (3) centres, Zulum explained that the palliatives aimed to alleviate the hardships faced by residents due to the federal government’s removal of fuel subsidies in May this year.
The beneficiaries comprised 15,000 male heads of households, each of whom received a 25 kg bag of rice and a 10 kg bag of beans. Additionally, 25,000 females received N5,000 in cash and a wrapper each.
Zulum stated, “In continuation of our efforts to distribute palliatives to vulnerable persons in Borno State, we are here in Konduga. In today’s distribution, about 25,000 vulnerable women each received a wrapper and N5,000, translating to about N125 million.
In addition to this, we also distributed a bag of 25 kg rice and 10 kg beans each to 15,000 male heads of households.”
Zulum initiated the distribution of fuel subsidy removal palliatives in July, initially targeting about 300,000 households across Borno State, with priority given to communities most affected by insurgency.
The distribution was later expanded to 400,000 households.
In each of the 27 wards in Maiduguri Metropolis and Jere Local Government area, over 2,000 vulnerable families have benefited from Zulum’s palliative efforts.
Additionally, every head of household in rural communities affected by insurgency will benefit.
In addition to food distribution, Zulum introduced other measures, including providing 80 buses for free transportation of farmers to and from their farms, 30 buses for subsidized transport for civil servants commuting to their offices, and the provision of subsidised metro city buses.
