A delegation of Ghanaian lawmakers on Tuesday, expressed admiration for Nigeria’s security legislative framework during a benchmarking visit to the National Assembly in Abuja.
Speaking on behalf of the Ghanaian delegation, Hon. James Agalga, who observed the House of Representatives’ proceedings, said: “Our mission here is a benchmarking visit to the National Assembly to try to understudy the security architecture of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and also to apprise ourselves of the workings of the committees responsible for the security sector.
“Following our arrival, Honorable Speaker, the National Assembly has extended courtesy to us. The reception has so far been very warm and cordial.
“We have paid a courtesy call on the Clerk to the National Assembly. He took us through some of the functions and how the House is configured, the committees, and the administration of the National Assembly.
“Again, this morning, we visited the Clerk to this House. He was very warm and took us through the workings. But most importantly, Mr. Speaker, we paid a visit to the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies yesterday. And that visit was very insightful for us.”
He affirmed that: “Nigeria has taken the lead in establishing an institute of that kind, which is designed to help build the capacities of members of this House and the Senate.
“That for us is an innovation. And upon our return home, we are going to raise the issue with Mr Speaker to see how we can collaborate with the National Assembly for the training of members of our Parliament with the hope that with that kind of bilateral arrangement between us and the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the National Assembly, our members’ capacity can be enhanced in order that we can deliver on our mandate.“
