The Egba Science Education Foundation has attributed lack of science teachers in Ogun schools, urging the Prince Dapo Abiodun-led administration to as a matter of urgency address the issue.
The foundation said the development had forced it to stop donating science equipment to secondary schools in the state.
The Vice-Chairman of the Foundation, Dr Funmilayo Alatise, disclosed this at a press conference organised to herald the Foundation’s maiden Olatunde Abudu annual lecture, to hold on March 15.
The theme of the lecture is, “The Impact of Science And Technology on Agriculture”.
She explained that the theme was considered suitable for the lecture to educate students and other expected participants on the importance of Science and Technology in today’s agriculture practices, as well as, re-emphasizing the need for government to diversify the economy into agriculture.
Alatise regretted that the foundation had to stop donating laboratory equipment to government secondary schools in different local governments of the state, where there were no science teachers to operate them.
The Vice-chairman, however, stated that the foundation had since, complained to the state government while assuring that their complaint is receiving attention from the government.
She said that the Egba Science Education was set up in 2022 to promote science education in public secondary schools as well as help students with deficiencies in science-related subjects.
“Over the years, we have equipped science laboratories in government schools in Abeokuta. When we found out that despite equipping those schools with science laboratory equipment, there were no science teachers to operate them. The equipment cost millions of naira but they became useless due to a lack of science teachers.
“We have stopped equipping laboratories and went into remedial programme for SS3 students and scholarship programme for University students across the nation for more than 10 years now. We select students from each secondary School through aptitude tests.
” We have a minimum of 50 beneficiaries annually and for the scholarship programme, we select two students from each university across the country. We strictly select only students who are Egba indigenes,” she added.
Alatise also explained that the annual lecture was conceived out of need to immortalise the founder of the foundation, Olatunde Abudu.
