Food security: Zamfara to construct rural feeder roads, 40 new markets

Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has described the development of rural infrastructure as critical to his administration’s commitment to improved agricultural production.

According to him, “My administration plans to construct 70 kilometres of feeder roads and build 40 new markets, which will comprise 4,000 shops.”

Lawal, who spoke on Thursday at Gidan Gona, Shinkafi Local Government Area, explained that “this will stimulate our economic activities, which have been affected by the activities of bandits, and ensure safe and hygienic handling of foodstuffs.”

A statement on Thursday by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, said that Lawal was in Shinkafi for the distribution of agricultural assets and farm input to farmers in Zamfara North as part of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (N-CARES) programme.

The statement noted that the CARES initiative will be launched in all three senatorial zones of the state.

The statement read, in part,
“Today, Governor Dauda Lawal kicked off the distribution of agricultural assets and farm input to beneficiaries in Zamfara North.

“The beneficiaries were empowered with all the necessary facilities, including seeds and seedlings spread for four years.

“Zamfara State Government has embarked upon an integrated approach to agricultural development by providing both farming input and much-needed rural infrastructure.

“This step will significantly assist our farmers in enhancing their production capacity and reducing the high poverty level and its attendant effects on the people.

“In his remarks, Governor Dauda Lawal restated the government’s resolve to allocate assets for production and mitigation of food loss and waste.

“With the mercy of Allah, our focus is currently on Result Area 2, under FADAMA III, with the primary objective of increasing food security and ensuring the safe functioning of food supply chains, especially for our vulnerable persons.”
