A fire broke out early Friday morning, ravaging a seven-storey building on Sanni Adewale Street in the Lagos Island Local Government Area, affecting several shops and causing widespread panic among residents.
The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident in a statement, noting that firefighters from the Ebute Elefun, Sari, and Lekki 1 stations were immediately dispatched after receiving a distress call at 5:17 a.m.
The fire crews arrived on the scene by 5:33 a.m. and were able to bring the situation under control.
“The fire, which started around 5:17 a.m., caused panic in the area as residents scrambled for safety,” Adeseye said.
“Thanks to the swift actions of the Lagos State Firefighters, the situation is now under control. Ventilation efforts are currently underway to ensure the safety of all in the area.”
Preliminary investigations suggest that the fire was caused by an electrical surge.
While the blaze destroyed items valued at millions of naira, no casualties have been reported as of press time.
