THE Federal Government has said it has taken concrete steps to check the nation’s porous borders and curb the influx of foreigners as well as trans-border crime.
Minister of Interior, Lieutenant Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd) who made this known in Abuja, told newsmen that technology is being deployed to properly man Nigerian borders with the ongoing installation communication and surveillance equipment in the respective border posts.
He noted particularly that the Solar powered project being constructed at Tolutoluwa, Yobe state would provide the Nigeria Immigration Service with information, employing modern communication and surveillance equipment to manage remote border areas.
He said the project which is near completion would provide voice and video communications, live streaming, data communication using e-mail and instant messaging.

According to Immigration sources, though Nigeria has only 84 approved land border control posts, there are more than 1,400 illegal borders in the country.
The Minister said the current administration of President Muhammadu Buhari embarked on border security reforms as part of the efforts to curb influx into the country and the security risk it posed to the nation.
He said government through immigration has resuscitated aerial border surveillance and the introduction of biometric visas to ascertain the true identity of the holder and also safeguard the security and integrity of the document.
He said: “The control of entry and exit of persons in Nigeria is administratively vested in the Directorate of Border Management of the Nigeria Immigration Service.
“These activities are carried through established control posts at the Nation”s borders namely: 5 airports, 6 Seaports and 114 land border control posts.
“We have strengthened the prosperity and security of Nigeria through proactive, effective and efficient border security and migration management,” he said.
