FCTA set to reposition agriculture in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), through its Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, is set to reposition the agricultural sector to achieve sustainable food security in the Territory.

Mandate Secretary for Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Lawan Kolo Geidam, made this assertion at the end of the briefings organised by the Secretariat aimed at familiarising the new Mandate Secretary with the operations of the various departments and enabling him to have a comprehensive understanding of their roles and functions towards effective coordination and alignment with common goals.

He stated that the activities of the departments are interconnected, and their collective efforts are crucial for enhancing food production and transforming the agricultural sector into a significant source of employment and wealth for the growing population.

He acknowledged that working in isolation would not lead to the desired outcomes and stressed the necessity of collaboration and cooperation among the departments.

Geidam said, “The activities of the Departments are interwoven. All are geared towards not only boosting food production but also making the sector a viable source of job and wealth creation for our teeming population. We cannot achieve this in isolation; all the departments must work in synergy to achieve this objective.”

While expressing satisfaction with the progress that has been recorded by the various departments, Geidam acknowledged that the challenges outlined during the briefings are surmountable, considering the priority that the Administration is giving to the sector.

“I am optimistic that with the commitment of our dear president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ably supported by the Hon. Minister, FCT Barr. Nyesom Wike, and Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, these challenges will be addressed. All we need from you as civil servants is sincerity and diligence in doing your jobs,” Geidam noted.

Geidam revealed that his next course of action involves visiting all the agricultural project sites in the FCT. His objective is to assess the current state of the projects and identify areas for improvement.

He expressed commitment to developing innovative strategies that will enhance the efficiency and productivity of these projects, aligning them with the prestigious status of the Federal Capital Territory.

The Mandate Secretary stressed the importance of educating and equipping residents, particularly the youth, with the necessary knowledge and skills to operate agriculture as a viable business.

“By imparting this knowledge, we hope to empower individuals to engage in agriculture as entrepreneurs, fostering economic growth and creating employment opportunities in the process,” he stated.
