A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and leading governorship aspirant in Ekiti State, Mr Kayode Ojo, has revealed that the ongoing cargo airport being constructed by the administration of Dr Kayode Fayemi when completed would be the catalyst for the economic development of the state.
Ojo, who contested the governorship primary in 2018 and came third behind Governor Fayemi and Chief Segun Oni said that the state must be industrialised for it to generate its revenue and meet up with its responsibilities to the citizens, adding that the airport would be one of the most potent tools to change the state’s economy for better.
The aspirant who spoke with newsmen in his country home of Ikoro-Ekiti, Ijero local government area of Ekiti state noted that the only way to make the state economically viable in the midst of the dwindling financial crisis in the country is to think outside the box and attract investment.
According to him, the state would generate more money to finance its programmes and sustain the economy to the benefit of the citizens when there are deliberate efforts to attract industries to the state, saying, that is the only way to go now. ”
He said: “To develop an economy, you need the people, environment and the fund. In Ekiti, we have the environment, the people but the financial resources are missing and we need to bridge the gap to be able to take development to the superior level.
“What I will do is to follow through the good policies of the incumbent administration. No doubt, Fayemi is having a good foundation that will need to build upon but before we get to where we need to be, we must be able to generate our own money. Lagos is doing well in this regard and Ogun state is carefully following in this regard.
“I have argued with so many people about the airport project. People were saying we don’t need it that the common man will not benefit, I laugh whenever I see people with that mindset.
“The airport is the number one catalyst to development and unlocking the potentials of Ekiti State because when you have access to the state, more people will come, and every person that comes, we spend money. When they buy anything, it will trickle down to the common man.
“Ekiti state has massive potentials, just look at the landscape, it is very beautiful. We can turn Ekiti into the number destination in Nigeria, even in Africa. Tourists can come here and if you aggregate it every time a tourist come into the state and spend money, it is injected into the local economy.”
On his plans for the education sector, the trained engineer disclosed that ” We must also invest in the education sector because our young ones are the future of this country. Why can’t we have the best training school for artisans in the country? That is one of the areas we have the lowest quality in this country. Our construction skills are so poor and unbelievable.
“If we do that, you will see people coming from all over the world for training here and we will collect money. When you aggregate these things for a long time, they will sustain the economy.”
Ojo advised the leadership of the party ahead of the 2022 governorship poll on the need to ensure unity among members, saying the APC would be doing itself a great danger approaching the poll with a divided house.
He added that the governorship aspirants should be given a level playing ground at the primaries and any attempt to impose an unpopular candidate on the people of Ekiti would be a great failure.
