During a webinar held on September 21, 2023, at Federal University Wukari, in Taraba state, UK-based business strategist and digital project manager Precious Onyenweaku made a compelling case for integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into Nigeria’s education system.
His presentation, titled “Artificial Intelligence: Implications for University Academic Utilization,” showcased AI’s transformative potential in reshaping the academic landscape in Nigeria, particularly through enhanced learning experiences and research capabilities.
Onyenweaku’s webinar, primarily attended by the university’s Department of Physiotherapy, illuminated the practical applications of AI that can foster academic excellence in Nigeria.
Drawing on his experience as co-founder of Forward Agro Institute and facilitator for the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development – Agro-Allied Program, he advocated for the systematic adoption of AI to address challenges in higher education.
He emphasized AI’s ability to personalize learning, making education more accessible and effective. “Imagine AI assistants providing personalized feedback, translating languages, and transcribing lectures,” Onyenweaku explained, urging students to embrace tools like ChatGPT, Grammarly, and Elicit to improve research, writing, and overall academic performance.
Through practical demonstrations, he illustrated how AI can enhance research by sifting through vast datasets, summarizing key findings, and supporting students with organization and exam preparation.
He also highlighted AI’s role in enhancing accessibility, particularly for students with disabilities, by recording and transcribing lectures or generating summaries.
The strategist noted the successful integration of AI in education in more developed countries, and while acknowledging Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges, he underscored that technology could be a powerful equalizer.
Onyenweaku argued that AI could bridge the gap between students from different socio-economic backgrounds by offering personalized learning opportunities and academic resources tailored to individual needs.
However, Onyenweaku’s message wasn’t solely about embracing technology; he emphasized responsible and ethical AI usage.
He stressed that while AI can amplify academic potential, it must not replace critical thinking and creativity. “AI is a tool to enhance learning, not a shortcut to avoid intellectual effort,” he cautioned, urging students to maintain high standards of academic integrity and avoid plagiarism.
The webinar left a profound impact on students, many of whom expressed excitement about the potential of AI to transform their academic journey.
