Former Chairman of the Niger State Universal Basic Education Board (NSUBEB), Alhaji Alhassan Bawa Niworo, has regained freedom after spending 223 days in captivity.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that Niworo was released on Monday, barely eight months after he was abducted by suspected kidnappers.
The former NSUBEB chairman was kidnapped on September 30, 2025, alongside others while travelling from his hometown, Kainji, to Minna for a stakeholders’ meeting.
Sources said the incident occurred within the forest area of Kainji National Park along Zugurma-Ibbi road, a route notorious for terrorist activities.
It was learnt that the kidnappers initially demanded N120 million ransom for his release after the family reportedly offered N30 million.
The inability of the family to meet the initial demand was said to have prolonged his stay in captivity.
However, a source close to the community disclosed that Niworo eventually regained freedom after an additional N50 million ransom was allegedly paid to the abductors.
