
NASARAWA State governor, Umaru Tanko Al-makura has tasked corps members to embrace agriculture in order to diversify the country’s economy.
The governor made the call on Tuesday, at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Keffi, during the closing ceremony exercise for 2017 Batch A, Stream II Corp members.
Al-Makura who was represented by his deputy, Hon. Silas Agara, described Nasarawa State as a state endowed with abundant natural resources that offers limitless opportunities for socio-economic development and self actualisation.
According to the governor, “the state is agrarian and possesses about 90 percent of the total solid minerals in the country, corps members serving in the state should tap into the opportunities in these sectors to be self reliant, be employers of labour and help develop the state.”
He stated that, his administration attaches much value to youth development, hence the determination to harness the intellect and productive energies of the youth.
The governor also urged corps members to engage in community development projects that have direct bearing on the lives of the common man in the state.
Speaking earlier, the State Coordinator of the scheme, thanked the state governor for giving priority to the activities and welfare of corps members in the state.
She also said that, during the three weeks orientation exercise, the corps members were well behaved and adhered to camp rules and regulations including actively participating in all camp activities.
The state coordinator disclosed that, the 2017 Batch ‘A’, Stream II corps members which comprise of 946 males and 1005 females, successfully completed the three weeks orientation exercise and were exposed to various forms of training that would prepare them for the challenges ahead.
