A Federal High Court in Lagos on Wednesday sentenced a drug trafficker, 27-year-old Chima Nwosu to 15 months imprisonment.
The convict, a job seeker, was arraigned by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for hemp trafficking.
Justice Abdulazeez Anka while sentencing the trafficker, said the “accused is guilty as charged.”
Anka, accordingly, sentenced him to a term of 15 months imprisonment beginning from the date of his arrest.
The judge also ordered that the exhibit should be destroyed by the NDLEA.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Nwosu had pleaded guilty to the charge.
Following his guilty plea, the Prosecutor, Mr Aliyu Abubakar of NDLEA reviewed the facts of the case before the court.
Abubakar tendered as evidence the written statement of the accused, a request for scientific aid form, a drug analysis form as well as bulk of exhibits.
He urged the court to sentence the accused based on the evidence adduced by prosecution.
The convict was arrested on March 19, 2016 at Oke-Oko in Ibereko area of Badagry in Lagos State with 1.35kg of Cannabis Sativa (Hemp) which he sold to people.
The offence contravened the provisions of Section 11 (c) of the NDLEA Act, Laws of the Federation, 2004.
In his allocutus (a plea for mercy), the convict had begged the court for mercy, saying “I will turn a new leaf if given another opportunity.”
