Expectant mothers in Nigeria have received advice not to deny their husbands or spouses sex during pregnancy, as engaging in sexual activities cannot pose a threat to their unborn babies.
The advice was given in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, at Eleyele Primary Health Centre (PHC) during a programme titled “Psychological Effects of Pregnancy: Staying Healthy During and After,” organised by Eleyele Exclusive Lion’s Club International under District 404B4.
The guest lecturer, Mrs Abosede Olatilewa Seriki, who is a lecturer from the Oyo State College of Health Technology (OSCOTECH), Ibadan, emphasised that pregnant women must avoid being weighed down by the associated burden of pregnancy and should enjoy their marital lives without hindrance.
According to her, “Estrogen produced by women’s bodies during pregnancy often causes mood swings, leading to depression and lower self-esteem.
Though sex during the pregnancy period depends on women’s libidos, it is, however, key as it lubricates the passage for newborn babies during the birth session.”
Addressing the participants, numbering 50, the charter president of Eleyele Exclusive Lions Club, Lion Abimbola Oluwaseun Oshunsan, charged the expectant mothers with hygiene during and after the safe delivery of their newly born babies in the labour room.
Oshunsan, who distributed free antenatal products to pregnant women, stated: “It is important for you to ensure that you are mentally sound and be alive to your responsibility in your marital homes. Never allow the prevailing situation in the country to take its toll on you.”
She added: “In Lions Club International, we are committed to serving the cause of humanity and providing succour to the needy in health, education, and other social services.
Make use of what you have learned here for your individual benefits and that of your unborn babies.”
