A total of 22 students will be graduating with first-class honours during the maiden convocation ceremony of Dominion University, Ibadan, scheduled for Friday, October 26.
Addressing journalists on the premises of the University campus on Tuesday, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abel Olorunnisola, informed that: “We will be graduating a total of 96 students who have completed their three to four years of academic training in the eleven academic programmes domiciled in the Faculties of Arts, Social and Management Sciences, and Computing and Applied Sciences.
“A total of 22 (22.9%) graduated in the first-class division, 53 (55.2%) in the second-class upper division, and 21 (21.9%) in the second-class lower division.
Ten (45%) of the 22 first-class graduates are from the Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences, while twelve (54.5%) graduated from the Faculty of Computing and Applied Sciences.
“Also, fifteen (68.2%) of the 22 first-class graduates are female.
The percentages of students graduating in the different classes of the degree appear to follow the normal distribution.
Also, the very high percentage of female graduates that made the first class is consistent with the recent trends in higher education in Nigeria,” he said.
Olorunnisola further stated that Dominion University has embarked on a journey that will define the future of education and knowledge creation in Nigeria.
“Our commitment to education and knowledge dissemination will remain unwavering,” he noted. In his remarks, Chancellor of Dominion University, Bishop Taiwo Adelakun, said: “We received the operating licence as a private university on Tuesday, February 5, 2019, and we commenced academic activities in October of the same year with 113 students.
“Four months into our existence, COVID-19 struck, causing academic disruptions for the rest of the session.
Thank God for the robust ICT policy already in place to run the institution online. The university has succeeded in running four uninterrupted academic sessions and is just at the beginning of the fifth session.
“I strongly believe the best is yet to come for Dominion University in her quest for dominance amongst educational institutions globally.
These graduates, who are the first of their kind from the university, I am confident, will, through their output in their various fields of endeavours, prove to the entire world the stuff Dominion University is made of,” he said.
The convocation ceremony begins on Wednesday, October 18, with the convocation service followed by the convocation lecture on Thursday, to be delivered by Pastor Matthew Asimolowo.
The conferment of the first degree and the award of prizes to the maiden graduates come up on Friday, October 20, 2023.
