Chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Honourable Damilare Abioro, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to stop the prosecution of some protesters facing trial over the August 10 days nationwide #ENDBADGOVERNANCE protest.
No fewer than 10 protesters who were arrested are facing charges bothering on Treason, violent attacks on public assets, among others and had been granted N10 million bail each.
Abioro, in a statement made available to newsmen, asked Tinubu to show clemency on the arrested protesters currently being prosecuted in court by discontinueing the trial.
The NNPP Chieftain admitted that though the country is facing hardships on many fronts but violent protests will further aggravate the suffering of the masses. Instead he advised Nigerian youths to always embrace dialogue with government instead of protest.
The Agosasa-born politician added that Nigerian youths have spoken with their constitutional right through nationwide protest and their voices had been heard as confirmed by Mr. President.
According to him, the President being the father to both old and young should pardon the protesters while he is addressing the concerns raised during the protest.
“it is true that no government will allow any individual or group to turn the society into any form of turmoil with the current situation in the country but Mr. President as a father to all, must show clemency to the arrested protesters.
“violent protest is not and can never be an option with the current situation we have found ourselves as a nation because the masses they are fighting for will still be at the receiving end, should anything untoward happens, though that is not our wish.
“Let me commend Mr. President for acknowledging the plights of Nigerians as witnessed during the last nationwide protest” he said.
“with such act from Mr. President, I enjoin our youths and the organizers of the protest to take advantage of a dialogue window by Mr. President to enter into meaningful engagement with him and other stakeholders in addressing their demands,” Mr. Abioro added.
Abioro, however, asked Tinubu and the state governors to quickly fix the economic and security challenges facing the country in order to reduce the level of hardships and loss of lives facing Nigerians.
