Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has hailed the formal return of the Tinapa Business and Leisure Resort to the state government, describing it as a battle fought and won for the state, and a milestone in the state’s economic renewal.
Speaking during the handover ceremony in Calabar, Governor Otu said the recovery of Tinapa was not just about reclaiming a long-lost asset but also about restoring a bold vision that once positioned the state on the global economic map.
“The return of Tinapa is not merely an event; it is a rebirth, the triumph of faith, patience and resilience,” the governor declared.
He recalled that Tinapa, conceived under former Governor Donald Duke and once showcased the state’s ability to pursue investment-driven development with creativity and courage.
He assured that under his People First Agenda, the state government will reposition the Free Trade Zone as a thriving hub for commerce, tourism and the creative economy.
“We are breathing new life into Tinapa, not as a relic of abandoned ambition but as a living symbol of Cross River’s resilience,” he stated.
The governor disclosed that his administration is already engaging credible investors and development partners to transform Tinapa into a vibrant centre of trade and job creation, operating under a transparent and accountable management structure.
“This moment is a collective victory for our past leaders whose dreams gave it birth, for the government that fought to reclaim it, and for future generations who will inherit its promise. Together, we shall turn this symbol of struggle into a testament of triumph,” Otu added.
He commended the Federal Government, the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON), and other relevant agencies for their cooperation in the transition process, while appreciating stakeholders who worked behind the scenes to secure the asset’s return.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to revitalising the state’s economy, Otu said the rebirth of Tinapa will herald a new era of growth and prosperity for Cross River.
The governor noted that before Tinapa’s establishment in 2007, Cross River had few landmark developments that commanded national or international attention.
He commended former Governor Duke for envisioning a project that redefined how the world perceived the state.
The Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Mike Odere, described the handover as a moment of pride and renewed hope for the people of Cross River.
On his part, the Executive Director of AMCON, Mr. Shola Lamide, confirmed that the corporation had taken over Tinapa in 2011, but faced challenges attracting private investors to revive it.
He expressed satisfaction with the handover, describing it as a win for both AMCON and the people of the state.
