SENATOR representing Oyo Central senatorial district at the National Assembly, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, has hailed the judgment of a Federal High Court, Abuja, on Wednesday, which dismissed a suit filed against her by some Accord Party chieftains from Oyo State.
Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, on Wednesday, dismissed the case of dual citizenship filed against Sunmonu after the 2015 general election, in a case with suit number FCC/ABJ/CS/760/2015 filed by Abiodun Wahab, Bola Akinyemi, Emmanuel Oladeji, Samuel Elegbede and Thomas Ajao.
Justice Dimgba upheld the preliminary objection filed by lawyers to Senator Sunmonu, that the issue of dual citizenship had been canvassed at the Election Petition Tribunal and the Court of Appeal by Accord Party and Chief Bisi Ilaka.
He also held that both the tribunal and Appeal Court had definitely decided the issue.
He said that his court would not be used as a conduit for vexatious, frivolous and baseless matters designed to distract elected officeholders from concentrating on their duties.
Dimgba also described the case and arguments canvassed by the plaintiffs as “absurd” and dismissed the matter in its entirety.
In her reaction, Senator Sunmonu, who spoke from Saudi Arabia, said she was more focussed on governance than petty politics, while expressing assurance that she was never shaken and had always remained hopeful that she would always prevail.
“The law has always been clear and the opposition just wanted to give hope to their supporters. Now there is a judgment, I can only wonder what they will come up with next. My focus is on making the lives of Oyo Central citizens better and I will not relent in my efforts,” she said.
