THERE was commotion in Ipteu Ijesa campus of Osun State University (UNIOSUN), on Tuesday when some men of Nigeria Air Force Institute of Safety suddenly stormed the school, beating up some students and lecturers of the institution.
The development created tension as students and workers and workers of the institution ran in different direction to escape the wrath of the air force officers, who were said to have invaded the campus in Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC), wielding guns and other dangerous weapons.
Though the motive behind the invasion could not be ascertained, Nigerian Tribune reliably gathered that the armed air force personnel stormed the school to arrest some students, suspected to be involved in Internet fraud, popularly known as “yahoo yahoo”.
In the ensuing melee, no fewer than 11 students and two workers of the institution were critically injured from the alleged assault occasioned by the use of gun butts and sticks used on them by air force men.
Speaking on the development, the Dean, student affairs of UNIOSUN, Dr Adebimpe Adigun described the attack as unprecedented, saying that it was chaotic and inhuman.
According to her, “six of our students are on the bed receiving treatment in the hospital, five are being treated on the bench now. Two members of staff are also wounded by these military men. They did not fire a single shot, but they beat students and injured them, including some staff members”.
“They threatened to shoot me if I moved close to them. I knelt down and beg, but they did not listen. I later called their commandant on the phone to help talk to his boys. I think he did and they have left our campus now. But, we are yet to see some students, who ran inside the bush to escape the attack”, Adigun remarked.
However, efforts made to get the reaction of the Commandant of the Air Force Institute of Safety, Air Commodore Jolasinmi on the attack were unsuccessful as his phone line was inaccessible.
