BREAKING: Teargas fired as police, security agents battle to control protesters from taking over Lekki tollgate

Scene at Lekki tollgate at the #EndSARS Memorial on Wednesday.

Palpable tension is brewing at the Lekki tollgate in Lagos State now as police fired tear gas canisters to disperse the large crowd of protesters at the venue.

The crowd had become too large to control for the security operatives as hundreds of vehicles were blocking the free flow of traffic along the road.

Unlike the situation in the last one hour, when  the protesters were only going in a vehicle procession to and fro the toll gate area, the area has become crowded and rowdy

As of the time of this report, hundreds of vehicles had been parked near the toll gate and occupants of some of the vehicles have disembarked and are on the road.

The protesters are gradually occupying the toll gate despite the stiff resistance put up by the security operatives at the toll gate.

Efforts by the police and other security and law enforcement agencies to stop the #EndSARS protesters from gathering failed.

Therefore, the police resorted to shooting teargas to disperse the crowd and to prevent them from taking over the toll gate.
