Bingham varsity confirms suspension of three students over drug abuse

Management of Bingham University, Karu, has confirmed the suspension of three students over drug abuse and their subsequent arrest by the Nigerian Police Force for the alleged murder of a commercial transporter.

This confirmation came through a statement signed by Mr Daburi Misal, Director of Public Affairs at Bingham University, and was made available to journalists in the Karu local government area of Nasarawa State on Tuesday.

According to Misal, the confirmation was in response to a news report circulating on social media about the arrest of the trio for the alleged crime by authorities of the Abuja Police Command.

He clarified that the suspension of the students from the university was due to drug abuse.

“The management of the university hereby expresses its profound sadness over the development and states that the affected students were identified in March 2023 through the university’s zero-tolerance policy on drugs.

They were suspended from the university for being in possession of marijuana and other illicit substances,” he said.

Misal further explained that as required by the university’s policies, the students were supposed to be taken to a rehabilitation centre by their guardians, and only after certification by the university’s psychiatrist, they would be allowed back to the university.

“It was therefore shocking to see that the students who were supposed to be in rehabilitation are being paraded by the police in Abuja.

“The university, however, pledges its full cooperation with the police in their investigation of the matter while expressing its deepest sympathy to the family of the deceased,” he added.
