Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia on Monday assented to the Electricity Bill to improve power generation and supply in the state.
In a statement issued by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Kula Tersoo, said that with the bill signed into law by the governor, the new electricity law is expected to have several positive impacts on the people and economy of the state.
Tagged “The Benue Electricity Law 2026”, the governor’s media aide said: “The law will create a legal framework for increased electricity generation, transmission and distribution within the state, leading to a more reliable and stable power supply for homes, businesses, schools and hospitals.
“Improved electricity will attract investors, encourage the establishment of industries and businesses, and create employment opportunities for thousands of Benue residents, particularly youths.
“Businesses will spend less on generators, fuel and alternative power sources. This will lower production costs, increase profitability, and make locally produced goods more competitive,” the statement read in part.
Tersoo further stated that the new law is expected to enhance consumer protection and improve rural electrification and quality of life.
He added: “The law provides mechanisms for enforcing consumer rights, ensuring fair billing practices, improved service delivery, quicker resolution of complaints and accountability from electricity providers.
“Communities that currently lack access to electricity can benefit from expanded power infrastructure, improving healthcare services, education, agricultural processing, security and overall living standards across the state.
“In summary, the law will help deliver more reliable electricity, stimulate economic development, protect consumers, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for residents across Benue State, positioning the state for greater industrialisation and sustainable growth.”
