Security has been beefed up in Awka, the Anambra state capital as members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) hold their congresses to elect a new chairman and other members of the State Executive Council of the party.
About 3,000 delegates drawn from the 21 local government Areas and three Senatorial districts of the state are to elect the party’s new SEC who are to pilot the affairs of the PDP in the state.
The Dora Akunyili Women Development Center Awka is the venue of the congresses which has been flooded with armed security agencies including soldiers, plan cloth security operatives, riot policemen and officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC).
The Enugu State Deputy Governor, Ifeanyi Ossai who is the chairman of the five-man congress committee and secretary of the committee, Mr Ndubuisi Eneh are to midwife the congresses with 36 positions to be contested for.
Members of the Committee had last week rescheduled the Congress for (today) Wednesday.
Chigozie Igwe is the current State Caretaker Chairman of PDP in the state
Igwe took over from Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu who presided over the affairs of the party for three years.
